My name is Sarah, and I have been part of the Edwin Thompson team in Keswick for the past six months, working and training across both the residential and commercial departments.
I moved to Keswick just over a year ago, and it didn’t take long to fall in love with the town and call it home. What makes Keswick so special to me comes down to a few things.
The first is the breathtaking backdrop of lakes, fells, and woodland offering endless entertainment. Keswick is surrounded by mountains to choose from for a day of hiking, ranging from quick low-level peaks up to the highest mountain in England! A favourite hike of mine is the Coledale Horseshoe, one which offers a changing view throughout, and ticks off 8 Wainwrights, if you’re counting! Derwentwater is also right on your doorstep for a more relaxed day at the lake either paddleboarding, swimming, or simply sitting with a picnic in the sun. Another outdoor activity which is loved by both the locals and tourists is fell running. This is certainly a way to keep a run exciting and ensures a beautiful view of Keswick from above.
My next favourite thing about Keswick is more fitting for the rainier days, which there are plenty of! Keswick has a fantastic mix of cosy cafés, lively bars with local bands, independent shops, and fabulous restaurants. A few of my personal favourites include, No Monkey Business, Lake Road Brunch, BarES, and The Round. For a coffee by the lake, The Moon and Sixpence is unbeatable, and a shop which is hard to leave empty handed is The Orchid House, always filled with unique, seasonal gifts. For me, a rainy day spent wandering Keswick’s shops and cafés is almost as good as a day in the mountains.
Third on my list of what makes Keswick extra special is its sense of community. Twice a week, the markets return, bringing local goods, fresh food and a lively bustle through Keswick Main Street. Other lovely community events include the Keswick Half Marathon, the Christmas light switch on, and shows produced by local theatre groups performed at Theatre by the Lake.
Finally, the property within Keswick is something that must be mentioned when describing what makes it such a lovely town. Simply walking through Keswick or driving through the surrounding villages is a quick reminder of how beautiful the old cottages and Lakeland homes here can be. Full of wooden beams, old slate fireplaces and windows peeking through to mountains, it isn’t hard to stumble across unique properties full of character and history. It is certainly the perfect place to work in the property sector and help people buy their dream homes or even move here and make their favourite holiday destination their permanent home.
Sarah Myles.
